The top two images above, from the MODIS and AMSR-E instruments, show Super Typhoon Higos overrunning Japan on October 1, 2002, causing enormous damage. The left image is a color composite using three MODIS channels (at wavelengths of 645, 555, and 470 nm). The right image is also a three-channel composite, using AMSR-E channels at frequencies of 89 GHz (two polarizations) and 23.8 GHz. The boxed regions (enlarged below the full images) show that the data from both instruments reveal the Karman vortex street caused by Yaku Island.
The AMSR-E images are courtesy of Japan's National Space Development Agency (NASDA), and the MODIS images are courtesy of the MODIS Science Team.
