Phil Sabelhaus graduated from the University of Maryland in 1978 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, he came to work at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center where he performed structural analysis on spacecraft instruments in the Instrument Systems Analysis Branch.
In 1981, Mr. Sabelhaus went to work as the Launch Vehicle Integration Manager for GTE Spacenet Corporation. During this time, he successfully managed the launch vehicle integration activities for three Communication Satellites launched on Ariane Launch Vehicles from French Guinea, South America. He returned to GSFC in the summer of 1985 to work on the NASA Space Station Program.
In October of 1989, he was promoted to Flight Telerobotic Servicier (FTS) Deputy Project Manager. After cancellation of the FTS Project in October 1991, he served as the Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere, Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) Deputy Project Manager, until being named the total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) Project Manager in September 1992. On TOMS, he was responsible for overseeing the development of the TOMS-EP spacecraft and three TOMS Flight Instruments. The TOMS-EP spacecraft was successfully launched in July1996, and the TOMS FM-4 Instrument was launched on the Japanese Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS) in August 1996.
In August of 1994, Mr. Sabelhaus was named the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) Deputy Project Manager. He remained responsible for the TOMS missions until after the ADEOS launch. In November 1996, Mr. Sabelhaus was named the Landsat 7 Project Manager. Landsat 7 was successfully launched on April 15, 1999. In late 1998, Mr. Sabelhaus was appointed the Deputy Associate Director of Flight Projects for EOS Development. As part of these duties, he has served as the EOS Aura Project Manager, the ESSP VCL Project Manager and is currently the EOS Aqua Project Manager.
Mr. Sabelhaus was born in August 1954, in Manhattan, Kansas; but is a life long resident of Maryland. He is married and has two daughters. |
